JVS Students to Exhibit in Columbus

Upper Valley JVS will showcase one of its outstanding programs during the 11th annual Student Achievement Fair at the 2009 Ohio School Boards Association Capital Conference and Trade Show on November 10 that will be held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The Student Achievement Fair will highlight the outstanding initiatives of students from 82 districts from across the state.

Topics to be featured in presentations and displays include: reading and math initiatives, energy conservation, performing and graphic arts, science, community service, living history, character building, business management, political studies, technology, career-technical projects, after-school programs and environmental education.

Three apprenticeship students from the Upper Valley JVS Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R) program will be presenting "Scientific Theory and Principles of HVAC." The students will be explaining how gas laws and the Laws of Thermodynamics are integral to understanding the refrigeration cycle. The HVAC/R program provides students real-world experience and in-class theory within a curriculum that increases student comprehension of HVAC using science principles. The participants will be: HVAC/R students Kyle Stienecker, Anna; Matt Kennedy, Sidney; and Eric Mayberry, Houston, and science instructor Frank Harris of Piqua.

Additional HVAC/R students will be hosting another booth at the Achievement Fair to share a recent project and to explain the theory and application of the refrigeration cycle. Scott Naill, HVAC/R instructor from Springfield, and Tony Trapp, HVAC/R Paraprofessional from Piqua, will accompany seniors Cody, Alexander, Botkins; Pat Fryman, Troy; and Brian Cavanaugh, Miami East to the event.

This four-hour celebration of learning and achievement will be attended by the more than 10,000 school board members, administrators, teachers, vendors and guests who participate in the four-day conference and trade show. Attendees will have the opportunity to observe and to learn what public school districts in Ohio are doing to enhance student learning and achievement at their schools.
